The renovation and expansion of the1947 Dillon Gym transformed an athletics facility on the western edge of Princeton University’s historic campus into a contemporary recreation and wellness hub—resolving issues of accessibility, space efficiency, and program deficiencies while re-establishing it as an inclusive, vibrant center of campus life.

The new Class of 1986 Fitness & Wellness Center, designed jointly by DIGSAU and MJMA Architecture & Design, now anchors Princeton’s Campus Recreation program, supporting the fitness, wellness, and social needs of a growing campus community. A new two-story addition replaces modular structures at the exterior court, introducing a light-filled lobby, fitness studios, and a landscaped entry plaza. An exposed mass-timber addition draws biophilic connections to the surrounding landscape. A delicate exterior bronze screen with a Gothic-inspired perforation pattern brings a contemporary sensibility to the historic gym.

The addition’s deep vertical shading fins, perforated metal screen, and southern cantilever provide shading and relate to the rhythm and proportion of nearby buildings.

The renovation reveals the building’s monumental trusses—previously concealed within squash court walls—as the dominant spatial feature of the reimagined fitness area.

Sustainable and biophilic design principles support wellness through the use of mass timber, engineered natural ventilation, abundant natural light, and ample visual connections to the landscape.
